Castles

Strečno 16 km

Hrad Strečno

The history of the castle is written in first half of the 14th century but the settlement of the
castle hill is older. Despite surviving less than four centuries it changed hands many times. In the end of the 17th century the castle was destroyed by the empire army of Leopold I. Strečno is in ruins since then. Nowadays the scenic castle ruin is on the high rope above river Váh and it is renovated in part. Považské Museum (The Váh-Region Museum) installed the permanent exposition inside of this castle. There is a castle school opened and a lot of programmes for children and for adults as well organized in the summer- time. For the all which are in love is one possibility- to wed in the castle chapel. The castle Strečno together with the opposite ruins of Starý hrad constitute the unique couple of medieval fortresses.


Budatín 26 km

Zámok Budatín

The impressive contexture of Budatinsky Castle is protected by rivers Váh and Kysuca. The castle was built in the middle of the 13th century as water and guard castle in which was paid a toll. The castle belongs to the oldest well- preserved sights of Žilina. Nowadays the rare exhibition of tinker art products supposedly unique in the world, are located here.


Orava castle 38 km

Oravský hrad

The Orava castle is an outstanding dominant of Orava region . It is situated over the village Oravský Podzámok, on the 12th meters high cliff. It was built on its high-rice terrace. The unique complex of three buildings- upper, central and lower castle is built from the middle of the 13th century till the beginning of the 17th century. In 1235 the Orava castle is mentioned as a royal castle. In the following centuries it changed hands many times and since 1556 it belonged to František Thurzo. He built a renaissance palace here. In 1800 the castle was destroyed by fire. The present form acquired in the biginning of the 20th century, when price Jozef Pálfy had the castle reconstructed into the romantic style. From 1868 there is an exposition of Orava Museum of P. O. Hviezdoslav- one of the oldest museums in Slovakia opened inside.


Trenčín castle 99 km

Trenčiansky hrad

The Trenčín castle belongs to the largest castle complex and the most scenic castles in Slovakia. It was built in the 11th century. Its typical feature is the habitable tower- it was built in the time of monastery of Matúš Čák, callled also „Lord of Váh and Tatras“. The rare memory is the Roman title from 179 A.D, which is sculptured on the castle rock. Nowadays, there are an exposition of the Museum Trenčín inside the castle.

The present impressive and romantic castle is built probably in place of the previous wood castle. The first written recordes of its existence come from 1113. In the 13th century it was rebuilt to the Gothic stone castle as the royal property and it changed hands . To the greatest valuables of the castle belong 10 Ghotic paintings of Nard Cione. The rare monument is also the carved angelic ceiling in the Gold hall, then the castle chapel with fresco paiting from 1662 and of course the Art Gallery with paitings of European painters. Very attractive is the subterranean cave in the depth of 26 meters .

The castle is complex of the medieval structures . It is enclosed by the double walls with the gate and three bastions. The second dominant is church of saint Katarína- the patroness of town. The tower of the church is from 1579 and it makes the specific silhouette of town. There are exposition of museum of coins and medals and the stories about bells and bell-founders of Kremnica, etc.

Demänovská Cave of Liberty 78 km

The cave represents morphologically the most varied part of the Cave System in Slovakia. It is formed by 9 connected caves with total length of 35 km. The Great Dome – the largest underground space in Slovak show caves- it is 65meters high and 112 meters long. The second attraction is never dry waterfall from the ceiling of Deep Dome. The air temperature is from 6,1°C to 7°C.


Demänovská Ice Cave 78 km

The cave entrance is located in the cliff Bašta on the northern side of Nízke Tatry only two kilometers northerly from the Demänovská Cave of Liberty. The cave belongs among long known finding places of bones of various vertebrates including the cave bear, which were in the first half of the 18th century considered dragons’ bones. That’s why the cave was called Dragon’s Cave in the past. The cave spaces consist from three developmental levels. Ice fill occurs in the lower parts of the cave. The greates experiences are offered in spring, when the water from the melt snow runs inside and immediately freezes. It makes so unique ice shapes as floor ice, ice columns, stalactites and stalagmites. The air temperature is about 0°C and in direction to the back non-glaciated parts rises from 1.3°C up to 5.7 °C.


Harmanecká Cave 82 km

Harmanecká jaskyňa The above lying rock is formed of pure limestone thanks to which the cave gained a name the White Cave. There are large halls Domes in two levels with great waterfalls, stalactites and stalagnites.The one of the largest accesible halls is Dome of Pagodas- It is 28meters high. There are two pagodas twelve meters high with three meters in diameter. The unconventional decoration has Hrášková hall as well. During the tour, visitor has to get over 1042 steps. The air temperature is between 5,8°C and 6,4°C.


Bystrianská Cave 98 km

Bystrianska jaskyňa The cave as only the one of all in Slovakia is accessible also for disabled people. The cave was formed by tectonical and erosional processes and modelled by underground stream Bystrianka. The cave has an abyss character with dominating flowstone curtains hanging on calcite crusts .There are two pagodes -12 meters high and 3 meters in diameter in Big Dome. From 1972 some parts of the Bystrianska Cave are used for speleotherapy –the atmospheric humidity is between 92 and 98%. It has healing effects on respiratory diseases and sensitive affection. You can feel the long-time effect after 14 days of stay. The air temperature is from 5,7 °C to 6,7 °C


Važecká Cave 92 km

The cave represents an important palaeontological finding place of cave bear bones, which was bigger and heavier than present brown bear. The cave was discovered in 1922 and after the reconstruction is opened to public since 1954. The cave entrance is 8 m above the bottomland of Biely Váh, at elevation of 784m. There is rich snow-white flowstone decoration, small lakes. The air temperature is from 6,5 °C to 7,1 °C and relative atmospheric humidity is from 94% to 96%.
